As I’ve gotten older I’ve started to appreciate the contentment of rituals. They make me feel safe, productive, clam, and sometimes really joyful. What are your rituals?
My rituals
- A daily cup of tea with no screen time. I have at least one cup of tea every day, sometimes in the morning, sometimes the afternoon, sometimes both. If it’s in the morning, I like to sit and watch the birds outside. If it’s in the afternoon, sometimes I take a break to read or journal or stare quietly at a wall (if I’m really tired). I try really hard to put my phone and computer away during tea time to get a real break.
- Updating my daily goal calendar. I have a goal calendar where I write what I did that day. It includes things as simple as going to the gym or for a walk, or getting coffee, as well as the tasks that I’ve done. On really good or really bad days, I mark how I felt so that I can see what makes me happiest or saddest. I started this on my sabbatical as a way to track my emotions and actions. It also helped me realize I have bad at object permanence. As soon as I’ve finished something, it’s like that thing didn’t exist. That makes it really hard for me to feel like I’m making progress because I just truly don’t remember what I’ve done.
- A daily walk. This one is a lot harder in the winter but I try. It’s a 40 minute walk, same path, and I don’t use my phone or music. This is another way for me to try and be more present and get myself away from screens!
- Art journaling. I try and do this one each day, but right now this Blogvent is kind of a stand-in. I fill in one page in my art journal. It can be about anything, an idea, a pattern, colors, collage. Whatever I want. It just allows me time and space to be creative without feeling like I have to make something “good.”
